VIVO IPL 2018: Rajasthan Royals | IPL T20 2018 Teams

The champion of IPL Season -1, Rajasthan Royals is a representative team of Rajasthan in the Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) which is owned by a group of people including Manoj Badle, Raj Kundra, Shilpa Shetty, and others. Manoj Badle and his partners paid a huge sum of $67 million for the ownership rights of the team. Currently, the team has a brand value of $27 million. Well, apart from being the 1st champion of IPL, the franchise was banned by Supreme Court for 2 years from IPL in the charges of corruption and match-fixing scandal in 2015. That is why Rajasthan Royals did not participate in IPL 2016 and IPL 2017. The franchise has its prime home ground Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

The first IPL tournament was to be held in April 2008 and BCCI revealed the names of eight cities-based franchises along with their owners in January 2018. The Rajasthan Royals is one of those 8 founding franchises in Indian Premier League cricket tournament. The franchise of Rajasthan Royals was sold to Manoj Badle, chairman of Rajasthan Royals for 67 million USD. It was the cheapest team/franchise to be sold in IPL. In the 2008 player auctions, Rajasthan Royals bought some famous players like Shane Warne, Graeme Smith, Ravindra Jadeja, and Yusuf Pathan. Shane Warne was sold to RR for $450,000 and was declared as the captain as well as coach of Rajasthan Royals in IPL season 1. Rahul Dravid was handling the captaincy of Rajasthan Royals during IPL season 2012. After that Shane Watson was declared as the captain of Rajasthan Royals in 2013 and Rahul Dravid worked as a mentor for the team. Later in 2015, the captain was again changed and this time it was Steven Smith, a top-order Australian Batsman.

The Home ground of Rajasthan Royals is the Sawai Mansingh Stadium situated in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The stadium has a capability of 30,000 people. Rajasthan Royals have two secondary home grounds which are Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad and Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. All the home matches of Royals were played in the Sawai Mansingh ground/stadium. But in IPL 2014 season, all home matches of Rajasthan Royals were hosted in Sardar Patel stadium, the secondary home ground of Royals.

Players of Rajasthan Royals:

In 2008 Auctions, the Rajasthan Royals bought cricketers who were not terribly popular or unknown, who never played international games. The franchise had also bought players who never played top-class cricket like Dinesh Salunkhe and Pravin Tambe and bought only a few experienced cricketers. That’s why the franchise was looking weak to play in IPL. The team additionally purchased some leading cricketers at various times in the IPL like Shane Warne, Graeme Smith, Rahul Dravid, Shantha Kumaran Sreesanth, Shaun Tait, Ross Taylor, Justin Langer, Damien Martyn, Munaf Patel, Yusuf Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, and Brad Hogg. Shane Warne was the captain of Rajasthan Royals for the season 2008 to 2011. And the team won the IPL 2008 championship only under the captaincy of Shane Warne.

Shane Warne was willing to quit the captaincy of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2011 but on the insistence of the franchise owners Shane Warne agreed to play for that season but decided that it was his final season of IPL that he was playing. Also, Shane Warne agreed because at that time he was the ultimate and only source of inspiration for the players in the team. Later in 2012, Warne quit the captaincy and the Rajasthan Royal Franchise turned to the man known as The Wall, Rahul Dravid. Rahul Dravid redeemed the captaincy very well. He won many matches in the two seasons of IPL that he captained but did not win any championship. Rahul Dravid captained Rajasthan Royals only in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, The team stood as the 2nd runner-up at the end of the tournament.

In IPL 2014, Rahul Dravid left the captaincy as well as the team and the captaincy was given to popular Australian cricketer Shane Watson. And then in next year or next season, the captaincy was handed over to Steve Smith. Steve Smith is a famous Australian top-class Batsman. Shane Watson did not leave the team and he played for the Royals ever since its beginning, became a permanent, consistent and leading member of the Australian cricket team before long once his good 1st season with the Royals in 2008.

The team of Rajasthan Royal was considered as the weakest team in IPL 2008 because there were less-experienced and less-famed players in the team and also the team lost its first match to Delhi Daredevils which was held on 19 April 2008. It was the 3rd match of IPL season 1 which took place at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. Everyone thought that the team would not stay long in the tournament. But the team won its 2nd match at its home ground against Kings XI Punjab at Sawai Mansingh Stadium by 6 wickets with 11 balls left. After this victory, Rajasthan Royals never lost any match in IPL 2008 except two. And under the captaincy of Shane Warne, the team reached the finals, played against Chennai Super Kings, defeated them and became the IPL 2008 Champions. The last match of the tournament was worth watching as the CSK had given them a tough meet. in the finals, CSK batted first and scored 163 runs in 20 overs with a loss of 5 wickets and in the next inning, RR scored 164 runs in 20 overs with a loss of 7 wickets. Only one ball was left for RR with an equal score and they needed 1 run to win. And Sohail Tanvir scored that winning run on the last ball. The team was awarded a prize money of 1.2 million USD.

Journey: 2009

The second season of IPL was organized in South Africa due to some security problems in India. The journey of Rajasthan Royals was operose and the team was looking weaker than season 1 due to unavailability of good players like Shane Watson and Sohail Tanvir. Sohail Tanvir, being a Pakistani Player, was banned from IPL and Shane Watson was busy in another cricket tournament held in UAE. Shane Warne was handling the captaincy of RR in this season also. The beginning of Rajasthan Royals was not so good as the Champions of season 1 lost their first match by 75 runs and with the second lowest score of IPL (58 runs) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The team of Rajasthan Royals won only 6 matches out of 13 matches they played. And thus, after losing their quarterfinals match against Kolkata Knight Riders, they were out of the tournament on 20 May 2009. The Rajasthan Royals team was standing at the 6th position out of the eight teams at the end of the season.

At the beginning of IPL Season 2010, players of Rajasthan Royals were excited and ready to defeat every team but again they lost their first match against Mumbai Indians at the Brabourne Stadium with a narrow score of 4 runs. The Rajasthan Royals lost first 3 consecutive matches in the tournament and won next 4 consecutive matches in IPL 2010. Everyone was thinking that this time RR could make it to the finals. The Royals were in their true form and Yusuf Pathan, Naman Ojha, and Abhishek Jhunjhunwala were amongst the reasons for the victory of RR in these 4 matches. In that winning 4th match, Naman Ojha scored 80 runs alone in 49 balls and RR raised a target of 178 runs for their opponents Chennai SuperKings. Though the RR was in a good form they only won 6 matches out of the 14 matches they played and finished 7th out of the eight teams on the table. The Team did not even qualify for the semifinals.

In 2011, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab had briefly ejected from the league due to problems with their unreported possession changes. The groups were reinstated with involvement from the tribunal. Their homeowners were broken into many legal entities once the BCCI needed the incorporation of the businesses. This time they finished at the 6th place out of the 10 teams played in the tournament.

Journey: 2012

In IPL season 2012, Shane Warne quit the captaincy of Rajasthan Royals and left the team. The captaincy was given to ‘THE WALL’ Rahul Dravid. Under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid, the Rajasthan Royals has a good start in their journey of IPL 2012 tournament. They played their first match against Kings XI Punjab and won the game by 31 runs. RR won their first two matches in IPL and was a good start for them. However, they lost their next two matches consecutively and only won 7 matches out of the 16 they played. They were just one match away from the qualifier round but they lost that match and hence lost the tournament once again. This time, the team was standing at 7th position among the point table at the end of the tournament.

Journey: 2013

The IPL season 6 featured 9 teams and was played from 3 April to 26 May in 2013. This season was full of Ups and Downs for the Rajasthan Royals as they won the first match and lost the 2nd match and so on but this time their performance was better than previous seasons. Rajasthan Royals qualified for the qualifier round by finishing third within the group stage, therefore grabbing a spot in the IPL 2013. They won against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator round, however, lost to Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier round and that did certain their exit from the championship league. Shane Watson was declared as the ‘Man of the Tournament’. On sixteen May 2013, three Rajasthan Royals players Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were caught from Mumbai by Delhi Police besides eleven bookies on charges of spot-fixing in the IPL championship tournament. The fixing was done in the matches against Pune Warriors on May 5, Kings XI Punjab on May 9 and Mumbai Indians on May 15. Later BCCI suspended the above mentioned 3 players.

IPL season 7 was played from 16 April to 1 June among 8 teams. In this season Rajasthan Royals held in 5 players Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson, Sanju Samson, James novelist and Stuart Binny for the seventh season of the IPL. Shane Watson was declared as the captain of Rajasthan Royals for this season and Rahul Dravid did not play any match and worked as a mentor for the Team of RR. The Royals played a total number of 14 matches in this season and won only 6 of them. And this time they did not even qualified for the Qualifier Round 1. However, the 4th match of Rajasthan Royals was very interesting and worth watching which was against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In this match, Rajasthan Royals scored 65 runs in just in 17 balls and they won the match by 6 wickets in 13 overs.

Journey: 2015

Rajasthan Royals started its journey of IPL 2015 by an amazing and impressive performance in the stadium. The RR franchise won all the first five matches consecutively and made everyone to believe that team could reach the finals this time. And in this season of IPL, Steve Smith was the captain of Rajasthan Royals. The first five matches that RR won were worth watching and gave a hope to all the fans of RR that this season RR could win the championship. The Royals went far on the journey and reached the Eliminator stage but lost the match to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 72 runs. In this match, Rajasthan Royals scored 109 runs only while RCB gave them a target of 181 runs. Rajasthan Royals ended at the 4th place on the point table.

The Rajasthan Royals were banned in this season and were out of IPL 2016 tournament.

The Rajasthan Royals were banned in this season and were out of IPL 2017 tournament also.

In 2015, when the IPL tournament was over, Rajasthan Royals was banned for 2 years from IPL on the charges of corruption and match-fixing. And Raj Kundra, one of the owners of RR, was banned for the lifetime from IPL. And this is the reason that kept Royals out of the IPL tournaments in 2016 and 2017.
